“Cash for Cloture” Infuriates Senator
Labeling the backroom ploys that shut brought the health care bill to a final vote “Cash for Cloture”, Texas Senator John Cornyn blasted the “special sweetheart deals” he claims were driven by special interest groups and lobbyists, and shut out the American people from the political process.
“I recall that when Senator Obama was running for President of the United State”, said Senator John Cornyn to his colleagues on the Senate Floor, “he talked about wanting to change the politics as usual in Washington DC, but I have to tell you, the majority and this administration have in many ways confirmed people’s worst suspicions about Washington politics as usual. And they have taken it to a new level; and that’s not a higher level, it’s a lower level.”
Four days before Christmas, Senator laid out his objections to the Senate leader Harry Reid, including the following:
- Cuts 470 billion dollars from medicare
- Creates a new entitlement program that will cost $2.5 trillion
- Increases premiums for American families that currently have health insurance
- Increases taxes on small businesses and individuals
According to Cornyn, the Obama Administration and Congressional Democrats made “sweetheart” deals “behind closed doors” with drug and insurance giants, and broke their promises to make the health care bill writing process “transparent” to the American people.
“It was the Obama Administration that cynically said one thing during the campaign, and then when it comes to actually passing legislation does completely the opposite”, said Cornyn.
