HR 2314: Did Jim Cooper Place Another Nail in the Constitutional Coffin?
March 4th, 2010 . by Wilson County Tea PartyOn 2/23, 5th District Rep. Jim Cooper voted YES for a bill that essentially allows the creation of a Native Hawaiian government (HR 2314 – Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act of 2009).
The bill allows the people of native Hawaiian descent to organize themselves as an Indian tribe where one does not exist. Once created, this tribe will self-govern – thus bypassing the Constitution. Columnist Michael Barone has published an article about one of the possible ramifications of this bill. Article: Will Senate Say Aloha to Racial Discrimination?
However, we must ask another question: If this new ‘right’ is given to the people of Hawaii, could it eventually be demanded by other groups who wish to self-govern? What about the Muslims who wish to live under Sharia law here in America?
Rep. Cooper: Did you ever consider the Constitutionally of this bill and the long term ramifications?
It doesn’t appear so.
NOTE: For unknown reasons, 6th District Rep. Bart Gordon did not cast a vote on this legislation.
